LionAid in battle against the import of lion trophies
Regal, glorious with it’s flowing golden mane, the Lion is the jungle’s king.
An enchanting sight to see, with a roar that resonates, from the wild in Africa to the mantlepieces here in Europe.
Why Europe? one may ask? And at whose behest?
Alas, it was but for the absence of it, or of ban ‘gainst it’s importation that let this tragic tale be true.
LIONAID IS CAMPAIGNING TO BAN THE IMPORTATION OF LION TROPHIES INTO THE UK/EU….Join their cause.
As a result of sport hunting, there has been a surge in the lion mortality rates and the ‘prized’ African Lion is now in grave danger and at the centre of the lion mortality crisis.
Today, there are only 25,000 (approx) lions (of all ages) left in Africa and of those, as few as 2,500 are adult males. Yet, nearly 650 are taken away as trophies to the UK/EU, each year. On closer introspection, the picture is even bleaker….
Lions in Western and Central Africa are genetically very different from lions in other parts of Africa and it is estimated that there there are only about 1500 of these amazing lions left. Yet, they are still being allowed to be trophy hunted in Burkino Faso and Cameroon.
LionAid is trying to bring about a moratorium on lion trophy hunting. To this end, LionAid launched a campaign last year to try and bring about a ban on the importation of Lion trophies into the UK and indeed the EU.
To date, we have 28 UK MPs and 5 MEPs who have either expressed their support for the issue and/or are following the debate closely. We are also pursuing interest from Finland, Germany and the Netherlands in support of the Campaign. Additionally, we have succeeded in getting two questions tabled at the European Parliament about the threat facing the African Lion. One presented by Linda MCavan (MEP), has been answered (rather unsatisfactorily) and the second question tabled by Catherine Bearder (MEP),has yet to be answered.
The Trustees are hoping to present the case in person for better lion protection measures before the European Parliament this September. We would like more MPS and MEPs to add their voices to this cause and YOU can help by sending our template letters to your local MP and to your local MEP.
